Newbury Hall provides high-quality Academic and Language development for students aged 14-18. We offer tuition in a range of subjects including Mathematics, Science, Business Studies, Computing, Geography, Study Skills, Cultural Orientation and English Language. Students can take GCSE, ‘A’ Level, or non-examination courses.

Our courses are ideal for a range of students, particularly the following:

  • Students who wish to go a British University
  • Students who need to improve their English language skills substantially without losing touch with their school subjects
  • Students who are going to repeat a year, and wish to put their final term to good use
  • Any student over 14 who would like a long course, but is too young for an adult language school

Subjects

Our course subjects are chosen because they are interesting and useful and because they are suitable for overseas students with a minimum of cultural adjustment. They are designed to have a maximum impact on the student’s future career. Currently we offer the following subjects.

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Business Studies
  • Computing
  • Geography
  • Study Skills
  • Cultural Orientation
  • English Language
  • IELTS

Our Staff are all qualified specialists in their own subjects. All have experience teaching their subject to overseas students.

IELTS

This important international examination is administered by Cambridge University. It is now the most widely accepted measurement of a student’s English Language level.

All British Universities require IELTS (between 6 and 7.5 for good universities).

Preparation for this examination is a priority for Newbury Hall students, and thanks to our programme of intensive language development and rigorous study schedules our students achieve very good results.

Preparation for IELTS: focuses on grammar, pronunciation, fluency, writing skills and reading comprehension, grammar and listening. Students follow an intensive language and examination preparation programme. In order to accustom students to the stress of the examination, practice examinations or ‘mocks’ are scheduled at several points during the course.

IELTS is an essential part of the Newbury Hall teaching system. We enter all students for IELTS twice a year. This provides a challenge for the students and motivates them to work hard on their English. It also gives us an objective assessment of their language level at the beginning and end of the year.

Study Skills

The unique feature of the Newbury Hall package is the amount of preparation that we put into developing the student’s ability to cross over from one learning culture to another. We have identified this as one of the principal barriers to success for overseas students. Many students have been accustomed to a very directed learning style in their own countries and find the relatively independent, learner-centred methods of British education difficult to cope with. The heavy study skills component at Newbury Hall enables students to work effectively and raise their grades by as much as 20 per cent.

Study Skills covers essential skills such as:

    • Maximising the effectiveness of study time
    • Speed reading
    • Note-taking skills
    • Seeking help
    • Categorisation
    • Research skills
    • Avoiding plagiarism
    • Essay writing
    • Footnotes
    • Handling statistical data
    • Asking the right questions

Our Teaching

Our teaching is effective, energetic and rigorous. We expect students to work hard and to give their best. Our teachers are trained to show students the easiest and quickest ways to learn, and we do not waste time. In return we expect the highest standards of attitude, work, punctuality and attendance from the students.

Our Classes

Our maximum class size for English Language classes at Newbury Hall is 8 students to one teacher. Many of our classes are even smaller groups than this.

Our subject lessons are sometimes taught in larger classes, (up to 12 students) according to the requirements of the subject.

Our specialities include the tutorial support lesson, in which our teachers offer help with any subject.

Our study skills lessons are an essential part of the Newbury hall programme. Here we teach students the best methods of learning, organising their work, managing their time, and all systems for maximising the efficiency of their studies

Students who come to Newbury to study ‘A’ levels and GCSE’s for one full year from the beginning of September may be offered the opportunity of  studying at St Bartholomew’s. This is a high quality sixth-form college adjacent to the school, where Newbury Hall students study with British Students in the same class.

Pre-GCSE (Junior Foundation Course)

This programme is ideal for students who:

  • Want a course which is longer than a language school course, and who want to keep in touch with all their school subjects.
  • Wish to start a GCSE course, but don’t have the correct level of English
  • Would like to enter a totally English-speaking environment

In other schools students of this type would simply study General English. At Newbury Hall we prefer to start immediately with a programme of Academic Studies including Maths, Introduction to Computing, Introduction to Business Studies, British Culture and IELTS. This gives the students a big start when they get to their GCSE classes.

Students can book onto this course for any period of 6 weeks or more within term-time (see fees and dates)

GCSE

GCSE students should generally have IELTS 5.0. They can usually study at least two of their subjects at St Bartholomew’s, which gives them the advantage of mixing with British students from the earliest stages of their studies. In this way they are completely at home in the British Educational system long before they arrive at University.

'A' Level

The combination of Newbury Hall and St. Bartholomew’s allows us to offer a truly impressive range of ‘A’ level subjects. Occasionally we have a student who wishes to study a subject which is not available at St Bartholomew’s and we may be able to help by offering Private Tuition.

WHICH COURSE?

The course is decided by :

  • Previous study record
  • Level of English
