Study and Career Planning

On arrival, we spend a significant amount of time one on one with each student. First of all we test their English and Mathematics: we look at their study record to date, wherever possible: we consult them o their interests and long-term plans; and we bring all this information together to make a highly individual study plan. This is likely to involve a mixture of subject lessons, language lessons and one-to-one tutorial support on each campus.

Academic Care

Our students are each assigned a tutor, whose job is to meet with each student once a fortnight and to go over with the student any results from tests or comments from teachers. We also ask students' own views about their progress.

Students who appear to be underperforming will receive particular attention from tutors, who pass the details to the subject tutors concerned and to the Director of Studies and Principal. Close attention is paid to each student’s personal strengths and weaknesses, and to their own study methods.

Pastoral Care

Our Welfare Officer and Director of Studies find time to speak to each student briefly each day. We have an open-door policy which allows students to come and discuss their concerns and difficulties quickly and have them dealt with. In this way we can minimise the difficulties that many students experience when they leave their families and find themselves in a new culture.

University Placement

The objective for almost every student coming to Newbury Hall is to get to university. This is therefore a very important part of our work. We prefer not to tie ourselves to a single university. Instead we help our students to choose the university and the course that is best suited to their own aims and plans. We offer an education counselling service covering application, advice, information and ongoing practical support for all courses for international students seeking to enter and study in a British university.
We help the students to complete their application forms, send in their supporting papers, track the progress of the applications, and keep the students informed of what is happening to those applications and what they need to do at each stage. Our understanding of the application process for all courses in the UK and our experience in administering successful applications means that applications are more likely to be successful.

Reporting

We report on all our students twice a term and we are always happy to write a special report if the parents require.

We always know the status of our students and we are happy to give a verbal report at any time.
