Universities
Every student who comes to Britain wants to go to a British University
British universities are amongst the best in the world, with a history of providing high quality teaching and a tradition of creating leaders.Newbury Hall has an excellent record of getting students into Universities.
Nearly all the students who come to Newbury Hall are hoping to go to a British University, and if they are prepared to study hard and let us help, they will succeed.
For Newbury Hall alumni the first year at university is relatively stress free.
They have already developed all the skills that they require for independent study, and they have the language skills that they need. They know how to use libraries, how to scan documents for important information, how to organise an essay and how to avoid plagiarism. Often our students say that they found themselves well ahead of the other students in their first year.
British universities require three A-levels for entrance. The grades vary from C up to A. The exact requirements will depend on a number of factors, including the university and the undergraduate subject to be studied.
There are three additional factors:
One is the personal statement, in which the student has to make his or her case for wishing to study the chosen subject. This is an extremely important document for University Admissions Officers. The personal statement is a key part of the application, and one for which Newbury Hall students can rely on receiving a lot of help from our staff. Our Centre Organiser and Director of Studies spend many hours with each student helping them to focus and develop their thoughts.
Next comes the school reference. Newbury Hall has a great advantage here: because of our small size, it is possible for the headmaster to know each student individually, and have a clear idea of their weaknesses and strengths. This adds great weight to the reference and helps to support the personal statement with an objective and sympathetic assessment.
The additional requirement for overseas students is the IELTS examination. This internationally accepted test of English Language skills is offered is offered in two modes: "General" and "Academic". University requirements vary between 6 and 7.5, and we focus a lot of our time and energy on helping the students to achieve good grades.
We take every student through IELTS twice a year - in December and in June - and each time we push up their score by a grade or two.
Choosing a university
Since opening we have helped our students into some excellent universities.
Choosing a university needs to be done with careful thought. Choosing the most prestigious university is not always the best choice.
All British Universities are inspected and accredited, and all have to maintain certain standards of education. But they are not all the same.We take great care in matching students to their university.
Some points to consider
- Subject reputation - although many parents eagerly read the university league tables, it is important to read the subject tables as well.
- Grades required - this has to be a close match with the students' predicted grades
- Location - some students want to be in or near a particular area
- Campus or City? - students may have a strong preference for one or the other
- Big or Small - this very much reflects the tastes and needs of the student.
